As part of its commitment to advancing sustainable solutions for the agri-food sector, the PRIMA project SaFood4Med participated in the CBE JU Cluster Workshop on Food & Feed, held in Brussels on June 9, 2026.

Represented by its Coordinator, Prof. Giovanni De Francesco, the project joined a broad community of researchers, innovators, industry representatives, European Commission officials and policymakers working to accelerate the development and market uptake of bio-based solutions for food, feed and nutraceutical applications.

The workshop brought together 37 European projects funded under CBE JU, Horizon Europe, and other European programmes, creating a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration across the European bioeconomy ecosystem.

Discussions focused on sustainable food and feed ingredients, innovative technologies based on biological resources, aquatic biomass valorization and alternative proteins as emerging solutions for more resilient and resource-efficient food systems. Participants also addressed the main challenges affecting the deployment of innovative bio-based products, including regulatory requirements, consumer acceptance, industrial scale-up and investment needs. The discussions highlighted the importance of supportive policy frameworks and stronger cooperation between research organizations, industry and public authorities to accelerate the transition towards sustainable food and feed value chains.

SaFood4Med’s participation in the workshop contributed to strengthening connections with other European initiatives working on sustainable food value chains and circular bioeconomy solutions. The event also provided an important opportunity to explore future synergies and exchange experiences on the valorization of biological resources, innovation uptake and sustainability strategies relevant to the Mediterranean agri-food sector.
