Work Packages
At SAFOOD4MED, our efforts are divided into focused work packages to achieve our mission of transforming agri-food waste into innovative antimicrobial bioplastics for sustainable food packaging.

WP1
Food-Waste Identification and Fractionation
Identifying, collecting, and processing food waste into high-purity components (cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose) to serve as the foundation for bioplastics.
WP2
Biopolymer Development
Creating bio-based polymers from food-waste components, integrating antimicrobial properties to enhance food safety and shelf life.
WP 3
Bioplastics Processing and Validation
Developing and validating sustainable bioplastic films for food packaging, ensuring their functionality, biodegradability, and compliance with international standards.
WP 4
Biogas Co-Production
Utilizing unconverted food waste to produce biogas, supporting a circular biorefinery model that maximizes resource use.
WP 5
Antimicrobial Activity Evaluation
Testing the effectiveness of the bioplastic packaging on fresh Mediterranean foods, such as tomatoes and cheese, to ensure food preservation and microbial safety..
WP 6
Life Cycle, Social, and Technoeconomic Analysis
Evaluating the environmental, social, and economic impact of SAFOOD4MED’s technologies to ensure sustainability and scalability.
WP 7
Dissemination and Communication
Sharing project outcomes with stakeholders, policymakers, and the general public through targeted communication and outreach strategies.
WP 8
Management and Coordination
Ensuring efficient project coordination, risk management, and collaboration among the consortium partners across the Mediterranean region.
